Autism Awareness
Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by differences in social interaction, communication, and patterns of behavior, interests, or activities. It's a spectrum condition, meaning that it affects individuals in vastly different ways and to varying degrees. There is no single "type" of autism, and each person on the spectrum has their own unique strengths and challenges. Understanding autism is the first step towards fostering a more inclusive and accepting community for neurodivergent individuals.
Our Connection to Autism Awareness: Joey's Journey
Our family's journey has been deeply touched by autism through our son, Joey. From early on, we recognized that Joey experienced the world in a unique way. Navigating the path to diagnosis and understanding his specific needs has been a learning experience filled with both challenges and immense joy. Joey's perspective, his passions (especially for cars!), and his unique way of seeing the world have enriched our lives immeasurably. His story is a testament to the fact that individuals with autism have incredible potential and contribute significantly to our communities. Read Joey’s story here.
Why Autism Awareness and Acceptance Matter
Raising awareness about autism is vital for fostering understanding and breaking down misconceptions. However, awareness alone is not enough. We must strive for autism acceptance – creating communities where neurodivergent individuals are valued, respected, and fully included in all aspects of life. This includes providing appropriate support, accommodations, and opportunities that allow individuals with autism to thrive and reach their full potential.

“Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. According to the Centers for Disease Control, autism affects an estimated 1 in 44 children in the United States today”
We know that there is not one autism but many subtypes, most influenced by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Because autism is a spectrum disorder, each person with autism has a distinct set of strengths and challenges. The ways in which people with autism learn, think and problem-solve can range from highly skilled to severely challenged. Some people with ASD may require significant support in their daily lives, while others may need less support and, in some cases, live entirely independently.
Several factors may influence the development of autism, and it is often accompanied by sensory sensitivities and medical issues such as gastrointestinal (GI) disorders, seizures or sleep disorders, as well as mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression and attention issues.
Signs of autism usually appear by age 2 or 3. Some associated development delays can appear even earlier, and often, it can be diagnosed as early as 18 months. Research shows that early intervention leads to positive outcomes later in life for people with autism.
